There are few things as delightful for the intellectually inclined as reading a book or sitting through a lecture by a writer or speaker that is absolutely in love and devoted to their subject—in this case—poetry. As a poet, I did take some notes while reading this, but Fussell’s arrogance and verbose approach to the subject was simply insulting.
The challenge to contemporary poetry would seem to be a pair of unhappy alternatives; either to contrive new schemes of empirically meaningful repetition that reflects and–more importantly–transmit the color of contemporary experience; or to recover schemes that poetic meter and poetic form paul fussell reflected the experience of the past.

Share your thoughts with other customers. I don’t always agree with some of Fussell’s pronouncements, but on the whole he gives a very nice introduction to the principles of prosody. But if you have read any of Fussell’s cultural criticism “Class,” for exampleyou know that he writes with verve and wit.

What he does is understand. Can’t think of anything else but that you might want and use me. I used the book to help my students scan poems better. This is a must for anyone seeking to understand how poetic verse brings together the various elements of language to form beautiful, meaningful and memorable expressions laul the human heart.

That being said, Paul Fussel is somewhat of a poetic prude, as exemplified in his exclusion of a discussion on free verse a huge literary movement that erupted in the 20th century, as I’m sure you know until this edition; even so, the forrm on free-verse is skimpy and pretty much useless.

The greater problem is Fussell’s obvious distaste for free verse. I referred to it frequently. And this book gives you that understanding in a few, packed pages.
Intensely boring, but lots of good information on writing and scanning poetry. Split into two main sections, Meter and Form per the title.
But it is interesting for dealing with the contemporary milieu. That said, there are two main problems, to my mind.
